Thorben Schoepe (M) is PhD student and research assistant in the Neuromorphic Behaving Systems (NBS) lab at Bielefeld University. He is currently transitioning to the Bio-Inspired Circuits and Systems Lab at the University of Groningen led by Prof. Dr. Elisabetta Chicca. During his PhD he explores the field of Neuromorphic navigation with its focus on event based sensory data processing in spiking neural networks. In his current publication (Schoepe et al, 2019) Thorben Schoepe demonstrates how event based auditory and visual sensory data can be preprocessed and integrated in a minimalistic network to take decisions in complex navigational tasks. Thorben Schoepe studied the Bachelor of Biomimetics at the Westfälische Hochschule in Bocholt, were he graduated in 2015. In 2018 he received a Master’s degree in Biomechatronics from Bielefeld University and Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences. Thorben Schoepe carried out his master’s thesis in the NBS lab where he investigated the role of temporal encoding of event based visual data in spiking neural networks. Here he implemented a spike based collision avoidance network onto a robotic platform and successfully evaluated its performance in closed loop.
